How To Replace A Lost Car Title In Missouri

In a busy life, sometimes it is easy to lose track of important things like your car title. And you miss them only when you require them urgently.
For instance, your car title is required when you want to sell your vehicle, complete the registration process in a different state, or get a car title loan.
Fortunately, the process to obtain a duplicate when you lose your original title is fairly simple and handled directly by the Missouri Department of Revenue (DOR).
Paperwork
To successfully request a replacement car title in MO you need to fill in the DOR-108 form. This form needs to be submitted along with all supporting documents by mail or in person to the relevant local MO DOR office.
You can easily grab a copy of the DOR-108 form at the local DOR office. Since this form is used for multiple titling purposes it contains many sections and you are not required to fill in all of them.
You need to fill in owner’s information, like full name, address and contact information. Make sure you provide your Missouri address. You will also have to provide details about the vehicle or motorbike in question, such as the vehicle identification number, year, make, color, and body style.
Other information includes data about lien, if applicable. Note the reason for the duplicate title (in your case lost) under the “Notary-Dup. Title Only” section. Do not forget to get the signature and seal of the notary public.

How to Apply

Missouri DOR allows application packages to be sent via mail or submitted in person at a local DOR office.
Mailing the application package is a more convenient way of having your lost title replaced. You shall have to send the correctly filled application form along with relevant paperwork and applicable fee to:

Motor Vehicle Bureau
301 West High Street
Room 370
P.O. Box 100
Jefferson City, MO 65105

The only payment modes available while applying through mail are money orders and checks. You need to have it payable to Missouri Department of Revenue.
Any applications with enclosed cash shall be rejected by the DOR. Include your name, address, daytime phone number, Social Security number, date of birth, and driver’s license number on the check if you decide to use it as a mode of payment.
You can deliver the application for a duplicate credential to a DOR title office in person as well. You shall have to submit the application package including Form DOR-108 and any additional paperwork that applies to your circumstances.

The DOR agent will process the MO replacement car title request once your submitted paperwork and fee payment is verified.
You need to pay $11 which is inclusive of the $2.50 processing fee to have a duplicate car title issued in Missouri.

How long does it take to get a duplicate title application?

Typically, it takes anywhere from 1 – 2 weeks for the title application to be processed and a duplicate title issued. You can check the status online by submitting a formal inquiry through the Online Check Status of a Title Request Form at the MO DOR website.
